I truly believe there’s a drink for any occasion. I’m a sucker for a hoppy Pale Ale like Ballast Point Grunion, but at the end of a long day I like to kick back with a Hendricks & Soda.
I sell Beer for a Living! My wife says that I show up at 10am, start drinking and making friends, and it’s hard to argue with her. There’s a lot more to it than that, though. There’s also the Food! In the first couple years of this job I probably gained 70 pounds. A company expense account and working for one of the best breweries around will do that. My wife had been encouraging me to slow down or make some changes, but I just kept trucking along until Christmas 2016 when she handed me the last present, a shirt box. I was mad at myself, because I knew that the 2XL shirt wasn’t going to fit me, but I yelled at her. That was the wake up call. I was tired of being tired, of waking up from not sleeping, taking x4 Ibuprofen first thing because I was already hurting, not being able to play with my kids. I was uncomfortable all of the time, hated clothes, hated pictures. I made the changes and haven’t looked back.
What EYB means to Dan:
To me “Earn Your Booze” is a sense of accomplishment. I may not be the strongest, or the fastest person out there, but I will be the HARDEST WORKER in the ROOM - and that deserves a drink! #ChasingGreatness #HustleHarder #SlamBarsThenBrews
How Dan prefers to EYB:
My incredibly understanding wife has let me build out a pretty complete #garagegym I’ve come to realize that I have an addictive personality which translates in going Balls to the Wall in pretty much everything I do. So, my picking up a couple of dumbbells grew into a fully decked out Temple of Iron that I’ve named #DANetFitness My workouts have been Bodybuilding programs and consist of either getting out of bed at 5am and wandering out to the garage to get it in before taking the kids to school, or coming home and slamming bars then brews after work.
Leg Day. Just kidding. My favorite part of Leg Day is when it’s over and I know I won’t have to do that for another week. My favorite workout is the 1000 Rep Arm Workout - the Pump is INSANE! It’s full of Supersets or Dropsets and by the end your sleeves are bursting! The next day, if you’ve done it right, you can’t even shampoo your hair. Cable Pushdowns and Cable Curls, Preacher Close-Grip Curls and Skull-Crushers, Dips and Hammer Curls…. this workout leaves you feeling like a BEAST!
James’s advice on how to EYB & improve health/fitness:
My advice, set small goals for yourself, celebrate those accomplishments, and set some more. When I began, I knew there was no way I could ever lose the 100+ pounds I needed to. But I knew I could lose 5 pounds - and after that I knew I could lose a different 5 pounds. Those 10 pounds turned into 15 and 20. I posted constantly to Social Media about my progress - not to spam my friends, but to keep myself accountable. I knew that if I slacked off and had a few too many cheat days in a row that someone would call me on it. That drove me to win, to succeed - and the thing that I eventually found out was that I wasn’t competing against anyone other than myself! I was going to be better tomorrow than I was yesterday!
